Column switches: Many-sided modules of great importance

Column switches are among the most multifunctional components of modern cars. These relatively small modules can control even several different vehicle systems simultaneously. Due to their high ergonomics and intuitive operation, they do not require visual control by the driver, are always "at hand," and their haptics allow precise identification of the function being used. This makes driving safer and certainly more comfortable.

Among the many tasks and functions that column switches aggregate into one compact subassembly are the control of lights, turn signals, wipers, cruise control, and gear shift functions (PRND). Additionally, they often have integrated manual control functions for the onboard computer. They meet both high mechanical requirements (high resistance to overload) and can easily withstand the large number of cycles that the switch must endure. Moreover, column switches have integrated other important modules, such as the SAS – precisely determining the steering wheel position, the signal transmission system from the rotating steering wheel (clockspring), and often the automatic return to the nominal position system (auto-cancelling).

When designing these key components at NG Engineering, we focus on quality and precision, incorporating high-end plastic part design, mechatronics, and advanced kinematics. By understanding user needs, we offer durable and efficient solutions for modern vehicles, combining advanced technology with intuitive control systems. Our development process emphasizes reliability, user-centric design, and seamless integration of electronic and mechanical systems.
